Irja Simbiak

(also known as Irto)

My interest in Environmental Management Systems (EMS) started under a master degree on Major of Infrastructure and Environmental Planning in the Groningen University in 2004-2005. My master research thesis was about the comparison of the Indonesian and the Netherland EIA systems. I have worked as a teaching assistant in the University of Cenderawasih in West Papua since 2006 and was also involved in several EIA projects as well. The Indonesian EIA system is relatively new and still developing. I was awarded an Australian Development Scholarship in 2009 and commenced my PhD program at UNSW. I conduct research about the involvement of Papuan indigenous peoples in the Indonesian EIA process. My main research question is whether or not the new guidelines facilitate effective involvement of indigenous people.  I would like to improve the guidelines to ensure better involvement for Papuan indigenous people. I am now in the process of completing my research.
